Meet the Globe Amaranth

Globe Amaranth | Gomphrena globosa

How do you know it’s me?:

  • I am an annual, with a dense, compact habit.

  • My blooms are clover-like: firm and rounded with a papery texture.

  • Within my bloom is the “true” flower. It’s tiny!

  • I have opposite, pointed-oval leaves. They are covered in a fine fuzz.

  • My stems are rigid, and also covered in fine hairs.

How big do I grow?: 6” - 2’ height and spread.

Sun-seeker or shade-lover: Full sun.

Where I prefer to put my roots: Moist, well-drained, fertile, acidic soils. I am drought tolerant.

Hardiness: Zone 2-11. Can be grown as a perennial in zones 9-11.

Original home: I am native to Central and South America.

Colors: My flowers are pink, purple, or white.

When I bloom: Summer to frost.

Wildlife friends: I attract bees, butterflies, and other insects.

Flora Fun Facts: I make a great dried flower, and retain my color well. Perfect for a dried winter bouquet, or a flower crown!

More Info: This incredibly heat tolerant annual is a playful addition to a garden or bouquet.

  • A member of the Amaranthaceae family.

  • A good plant selection for a border, container, butterfly garden, or cottage-style garden.

  • If using this plant for a bouquet, harvest each stem down to 1-2 sets of leaves from the bottom (for regeneration). Gomphrena has a long harvest window before the blooms begin to fade in color.

  • If growing from seed, it is recommended to sow seeds directly in the planting area once threat of frost has passed, or start indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost.

  • Deer tend to leave this plant be.
